Thinking About Your Next Car? Why an EV Could Be the Smarter Choice
If you’re planning to change your car in the next year, you’re not alone. New research with Irish car buyers shows that many are reaching the point where maintenance costs on older vehicles are adding up and the time feels right for a change. But when it comes to electric vehicles (EVs), there’s still some hesitation.

We spoke to a group of prospective car buyers from across Ireland, to hear what they are saying and why going electric could be easier than you think.
The Push to Change
For most buyers, the motivation isn’t about gadgets or style it’s about cost and reliability. Older cars mean higher servicing bills, failed NCTs, and the stress of unpredictable breakdowns. As one participant put it: “It reaches a tipping point, it’s just money on top of more money.” This is exactly where EVs can come in. Lower running costs, cheaper servicing, and fewer moving parts make them easier and more affordable, to own in the long run.
Charging and Range
Buyers often worry about charging logistics: will there be enough chargers, and will they be fast enough? In reality, most EV owners charge at home, meaning their car is ready to go every morning. For longer trips, Ireland’s charging network is expanding and with ranges on newer EVs often 400km or more, cross-country driving is becoming routine.
Technology Fears
Some of the prospective buyers we spoke to worry about “buying too early” and ending up with outdated tech. But like smartphones, EV technology is constantly improving, and newer models are designed with software updates to keep them current. Choosing a reputable brand with strong warranty cover can provide peace of mind.
The Second-Hand Market
Some prospective buyers voiced concerns about depreciation and whether dealers will take EVs as trade-ins. In reality, falling new EV prices are shaping the second-hand market and as EV adoption grows, the used market will naturally strengthen.
What Buyers Want to See
The research also found that most prospective buyers see themselves in an EV eventually, but wanted reassurance on range, battery life, and everyday practicality.
Many also mentioned that advice from trusted local mechanics carries huge weight highlighting the importance of real-world experiences.
Why Waiting Could Cost You
Holding off might feel safe, but the reality is that EVs are already cheaper to run, better for the environment, and increasingly accessible. Every year spent in a petrol or diesel risks higher maintenance bills, unpredictable fuel costs, and more emissions. For many Irish drivers, the smartest financial and environmental choice is to make the switch sooner rather than later.
